I’ve decided that by the end of the summer, I’m going to get myself another commuter bike: something slightly zippier than my Carmen, for when I’m more concerned with speed than fashion. I’m about 95% sure that it’s going to be a mixte, as I don’t like most women’s frames, and while I do adore the classic diamond frame, some of my outfits are diamond-frame-prohibitive, so I’ll reserve diamond frames for recreational purposes.
My dream is the Soma Buena Vista mixte. Unfortunately, not only is it pricey, but I’m concerned about buying a frame without being able to see how its particular geometry works for me. So, for now, I’m looking at complete bikes that I can actually test ride — with the full expectation of replacing most parts.
Earlier this week, I headed to Budget Bicycle Center to take a few bikes for a spin. Despite their enormous inventory, I was a bit disappointed with the mixte selection. I rejected several right away, since it was painfully obvious just by looking at them that the frames were going to be too small. Oh, the joys of being 5’8″. That left me with 4 bikes that were in my price range. So far, this is the frontrunner:
Surprise, surprise…this is going down as an event in the LGRAB Summer Games!

I had the same problem when shopping around for a vintage mixte (I ended up buying new). Every one I saw was miniature compared to my 5’7 frame.
