Father/daughter farmers’ market outing

05 Jun

My parents are pretty set in their ways, and it’s one of my favorite hobbies to expose them to new things and experiences — usually ones that I’m already quite fond of myself. On the menu for today: biking, the farmers’ market, and Stella’s spicy cheese bread.

Getting my mom on a bike was out of the question. She has never ridden one before and, at her age, is terrified of learning. My dad, on the other hand, did some bike commuting way back in the day, but his bikes have been sitting in the garage for quite a while now. Both of them were still in good shape, though in desperate need of some air. Problem easily solved, of course. We were both shocked by the recommended pressure for the tires on the one he used today — 120 psi. My dad was expecting it to be around 90 psi. Because my bike is a hybrid, I’m used to 70 psi or so. Also, I never thought about it until today, but the recommended air pressure for an average passenger car is right around 30 psi. In comparison, 120 psi for a road bike was just mind-boggling.

Because my parents and I already had plenty of food at our respective residences, we weren’t going to take advantage of everything that the local farmers’ market has to offer, which is a lot and more. No, we were on a mission: I was bent on getting some sugar snap peas for myself and a hot loaf of spicy cheese bread, fresh from the oven, for my parents. Along the way, I couldn’t resist picking up a package of portobello ravioli and some fresh pesto. Yum!

With our loot.

Playing with the ravioli.

Unfortunately, my parents did not fall in love with the spicy cheese bread, so I got to take the rest of the loaf home with me. Not that I’m complaining, of course.

Needless to say, this ride will go down my “Ride with your family” event for the LGRAB Summer Games.
